Teaching English in China





Hey all,

I love my job teaching English to kids in China! I have gotten enough questions about it that I thought I would write a quick post.

So here's some info:

I teach students one on one. The kids I teach are anywhere between the ages of 5-12 years old.



What are the qualifications to teach?

  • A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in any field.
  • Eligibility to work in the US or Canada.
  • At least 1 year of teaching experience (includes homeschooling, tutoring, coaching, mentoring or other life experiences)


What do you like about it?


  • The kids are great.
  • I can teach from anywhere.
  • I set my own schedule.
  • The classes are 25 minutes each.


Do you need any special equipment?

  • A decent computer with a camera (or a webcam)
  • An Ethernet cable that will reach to a modem (this is preferable). Mine is 50 feet long.
  • Really reliable Wifi
  • Headphones with a microphone
  • Some basic props - a puppet, teacher name tag, flashcards, easy stuff - especially if you have kiddos at home.
  • A space for teaching (mine was in our bathroom when we lived in Mexico)






How much do you make?

You can earn between $15 and $22 an hour. I average about $750 a month. I teach two hours a day, 6:00-8:00 am central time. 8:00am is the cut off for how late they will let you teach as it is 9:00 pm Beijing time. I open my schedule at 5:00 am but my first two slots have not been getting filled since daylight savings time started. Some teachers who make a full income off of this teach 12:00 - 8:00 am etc. I cannot do those hours. Evening hours are also available but that's dinner/homework/bedtime at our house so that does not work for our family.

Do you work outside of the time that you teach?

  • There is a feedback form that needs to be filled in for each class taught, which is done after the class. This takes as long as you want it to.
  • I always spend time the night before going through the lessons to see if there is any information I need to look into or if there are any props I should prepare.
  • Also, like any teaching job, you start with a basic level and then you can add on certifications as you go. The more certifications you have, the more you will get booked.

What should I know about teaching through this company?

  • Getting hired and going through training can be time consuming. You can't apply today and start tomorrow.
  • The hours are non traditional. I teach 6:00 am to 8:00 am Monday-Friday. I know people with a very full schedule, but they are teaching middle of the night/early morning hours and weekends too. 
  • You are responsible for getting and keeping your clientele, so you are not guaranteed any hours.

Still moving forward, still grieving

  We live a beautiful life in our sweet community surrounded by loving, caring people who shower us with love and support. AND every day is hard. Everything is hard. There is not a minute that goes by that I'm not thinking about Kevin.  He is everywhere. He is downstairs, when I wake up late on a Saturday, he's got coffee made, ESPN on the TV, puttering around the kitchen making some random new recipe, like an apple skillet bake for a big breakfast for the family. Walking through it

The hottest day. We moved Greta into her dorm and said “goodbye” to our safe little bubble of five.  Oh, my heart.  He's been gone four plus months now. How can that be?  Putting one foot in front of the other is harder than I thought it ever could be. The journey getting from Kevin's burial at the end of August to today has been exhausting and every step has felt so heavy.  I feel like I am wearing a weighted blanket on my shoulders that no one can see. The thing is, grieving is not something you can  avoid. You have to walk through it. There is no way of getting around it or sneaking past it. You have to put one foot in front of the other and walk straight into the pain and sadness of it. You have to wake up and take out the garbage that he always took out. You have to load the van to take a child to college...he was so good at that. You have to drop them off in their dorm, say goodbye and drive home...alone. No one is coming to take his place.
